Background: Parts of the Australian east cost city of Brisbane were so badly damaged by a tornado on 4th November that they have been declared a disaster area by the Queensland Government. In the suburb of Yeronga, the damage was particularly severe. A shopping centre was almost levelled, cars were crushed and power lines were strewn across the streets.
When the residents gathered the next morning to inspect the damage, they were amazed there had been no loss of life. Only a handful of people were in the Yeronga cinema when the storm hit it. The previous evening four hundred people had been packed in there.
The closure of roads caused chaos in other parts of the city the following morning, and hundreds of sightseers added to the traffic problems.
The tornado built up quickly only thirty miles (50 kms) from the city. Weather forecasters, with little time to plot its course, were unable to give much warning and the city was taken almost completely by surprise. Eye witnesses said they could see the tornado funnel crossing the sky and splitting in two as it came to a hill suburb.
