Background: Preparations have been going ahead at Cape Kennedy for the launching the "Project Fire" spacecraft. This is designed to provide scientists with data on heat at re-entry speeds of up to twenty-five thousand miles an hour.
It will also make a study of the plasma sheath which has caused communications blackouts during the re-entry of manned Mercury spacecraft.
The spacecraft will be launched by an Atlas rocket. The flight will last about thirty-two minutes, and the craft will probably land in the vicinity of Ascension Island in the South Atlantic.
