Background: The Ceylonese Government has set Saturday, May 1st, as the deadline for the surrender of self-styled "Che Guevarist" insurgents. Meanwhile, as the amnesty approaches, Government forces are continuing their hunt for the guerrillas on the ground and from the air.
The air operations are centred on Matara, a coastal town in the south. Many guerrillas are still holding out in this region. Helicopters provided by the Indian Air Force police the area, and will be used to drop leaflets calling on the guerrillas to surrender. They are promised reasonable treatment in rehabilitation centres if they do capitulate.
For Visnews Willie Phua flew on one helicopter mission over the region.
