Background: Indonesian President Suharto arrived in Manila on Tuesday (17 July) for a two-day visit in the latest of a series of mini-summits among leaders of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to strengthen their cooperation in face in the Indochina conflict.
Within minutes of his arrival to ceremonial welcome, Gen. Suharto was taken by helicopter to the isolated Puerto Azul beach resort, 50 miles south of Manila.
During his 21-hour visit, he held two rounds of talks with President Ferdinand Marcos on regional security problem and bilateral cooperation.
Their meeting at an isolated luxury beach resort just south of Manila took place on the eve of the United Nations conference in Geneva on Indochina refugees attended by their respective foreign ministers and their partners in ASEAN - Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand - who are suffering from the influx of Vietnamese refugees.
Another topic was a review by President Marcos of what he is doing to settle the seven-year-old Moslem secessionist rebellion in the far southern Philippines, where he is establishing two semi-autonomous regions in the effort to blunt the trouble.
Indochina, as a member of the Islamic nations, has a special interest in the issue on which it has tried to use its good office for a final settlement.
