    KAMEL: "Yes, of course."

SEQ. 2: MOSHE DAYAN: "I want to tell you that after we had only two meetings the one in Ismailia and the other in Jerusalem - short ones - and this is really the first real one by which we had talks for hours and hours to see and to search whether we can reach an understanding."

REPORTER: "So at least there is a better understanding of each others' position".

DAYAN: "Much better and I think it was very essential to have such a meeting in order to find out if there is any way to understanding, without it don't see how any progress could have been done."

    REPORTER: "You're still hopeful?"

SEQ. 3: CYRUS VANCE: "Major differences remain between the positions of the two sides. There is a lot of hard work ahead. Common elements of their approaches have been identified. I believe that Egypt and Israel remain fully committed to establishing a genuine peace and we will continue to help them in that effort."

The limited U.S. objective of the talks at Leeds Castle, Kent had been an agreement to hold further negotiations. But President Anwar Sadat said in Khartoum Tuesday (18 July) that it would be useless to hold more discussions unless Israel responded to his own peace plan or a new element was introduced as a basis for talks. Wednesday (19 July) Mr Vance said Mr Dayan and Mr Kamel would be reporting to their governments.

"I anticipate there will be further meetings when I go to the Middle East in about two weeks", said Mr. Vance. He added that U.S. envoy Alfred Atherton had been instructed to prepare for more meetings.
