Background: Nina Ricci's collection was notable by its absence when major Paris designers such as Christian Dior and Pierre Cardin presented this year's Summer look on January 23. Reporters invited for a friendly drink the next day were granted a mere glance of what they had missed. The show had to be cancelled because Ricci's 75 couture workers, members of the Communist-led General Confederation of Labour (CGT) had gone on strike. Bright red organdi or chiffon dinner and evening dresses gave pale blond models at the preview an ethereal look, underlined by wide belts tied at the back into huge bows. In contrast with these elaborate numbers, a navy and white striped day-dress looked almost plain with demure long sleeves buttoned at the wrist and large white collar. Contrast was the key note of the showing.
