Background: Voting took place on Sunday (26 February) in Senegal's first multi-party elections since the West African state became independent in 1960. With the preliminary results indicating that the ruling Socialist party of President Leopold Senghor will have a large majority, Reuters report the two opposition parties have complained of voting irregularities.

SYNOPSIS: There are 1.5 million registered voters in Senegal and on Sunday they had a choice of three parties....the ruling Socialist party, the centre-left Democratic Party and the Communist Independent African Party.

Here the leader of the Independent Party, Mr. Majhmout Diop, casts his vote. The Independents and the other opposition party, the Democrats, were legalised two years ago, when Senegal's constitution was amended to limit the number of parties to three. The opposition parties are expected to win about 20 seats.

The other 80 seats in Senegal's Assembly are expected to be won by President Senghor's Socialist party. He is seen here with his wife at a polling station. The 71-year-old President has led Senegal since it was granted independence from France 18 years ago, and if elected will serve for another five years.
