Background: The Chicago Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants, 6-5 in an extended American league baseball game on Tuesday (3 June).
The Giants led 5-3 at one stage, but the Cubs got two runs back to force the game into an extra innings, which they won.
The game was one of see-sawing fortunes as the Cubs had raced to an early lead of 3-1, before gradually surrendering it.
SYNOPSIS: Trailing 3-1 in the seventh, the Giants took the lead with four runs. The first came home on Bruce Miller's single.
It scored Darrel Thomas who had singled leading off the inning.
With the bases loaded, Willie Montanez hit a double play ball to shortstep, Rob Sperring, but Sperring threw the ball into right field and two runs came home. It gave the Giants the lead for the first time, 4-3.
Shoddy infield play cost the Cubs another run when second baseman, Manny Trillo bobbled Chris Speier's grounder. By the time Trillo recovered it was too late to get Bobby Murcer who crossed the plate with the fourth Giant run of the inning. The Cubs got one run back in the 7th, then tied the game in the ninth on Bill Madlock's home run, sending the game into extra innings which they also won.
