Background: THE UNITED STATES ATTEMPT TO ESTABLISH THE FIRST RENDEZVOUS IN SPACE FAILED TODAY (THURSDAY) WHEN THE TWO-MAN GEMINI IV SPACECRAFT WAS ORDERED NOT TO USE UP FUEL CHASING THE SECOND STAGE OF ITS LAUNCHING ROCKET INTO LOWER ORBIT. GEMINI IV WAS LAUNCHED, WITH MAJOR JAMES McDIVITT AND MAJOR EDWARD WHITE ABOARD, ON TOP OF A HUGE TITAN ROCKET AT CAPE KENNEDY AT 1516 GMT.

THE GEMINI LAUNCHING WAS DELAYED AN HOUR AND 16 MINUTES WHEN A FAULT DEVELOPED IN THE ERECTOR -- THE GANTRY-LIKE STRUCTURE THAT SURROUNDS THE ROCKET AND CARRIES INSTRUMENTS AND TECHNICIANS. BUT WHEN THE "LIFT-OFF" FINALLY CAME, WITH THE HUGE TITAN ROCKET RISING INTO A CLEAR SKY, IT WAS -- AS ONE ELATED OFFICIAL SAID -- "ACCORDING TO THE BOOK."
WITHIN 18 MINUTES, AS GEMINI FLASHED ACROSS THE WEST COAST OF AFRICA, CONTROLLERS REPORTED EVERYTHING WAS GOING WELL. MAJOR McDIVITT, THE COMMANDER, WAS IN COMMUNICATION WITH THE CANARY ISLAND TRACKING STATION. HE CONFIRMED SUCCESSFUL SEPARATION OF THE CAPSULE FROM THE SECOND -- AND LAST -- STAGE OF THE ROCKET.

THE ASTRONAUTS ARE NOW TRAVELLING IN ORBIT AT 17,567 MILES (2,800 KILOMETRES) AN HOUR. THEY'LL SPEND FOUR DAYS IN SPACE, MAKING 62 ORBITS OF THE EARTH. MAJOR WHITE WILL LEAVE GEMINI AND, WEARING A SPECIAL SPACE-SUIT, GO FOR A "SWIM" IN SPACE AT THE END OF A 25-FOOT LINE.

PLANS FOR MAJOR WHITE TO MAKE A RENDEZVOUS WITH THE SECOND STAGE OF THE ROCKET WERE CANCELLED AS SOON AS IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE BOOSTER WAS FALLING BACK TOWARDS THE EARTH FASTER THAN HAD BEEN EXPECTED. MAJOR McDIVITT USED UP HALF OF THE GEMINI'S FUEL CAPACITY TRYING TO GET CLOSER TO THE BOOSTER.

GEMINI IS NOW IN AN ORBIT RANGING FROM 100 TO 175 MILES (160 TO 280 KLMS), MAKING A REVOLUTION OF THE EARTH EVERY 94 MINUTES. THE CAPSULE IS DUE TO COME DOWN IN THE ATLANTIC ABOUT 400 MILES (650 KLMS) SOUTH OF BERMUDA, AT ABOUT 1600 GMT ON MONDAY.
