Background: Gunmen in Rome shot and seriously wounded the Jordanian Ambassador to Italy on Wednesday October 26, the day after the Jordanian envoy to India was seriously injured in a shooting incident. The ambassador of India, Mr. Mohammed Ali Khurme, was hit by six bullets in the chest, both arms and his left leg. He was walking home to lunch from the Jordanian embassy in New Delhi when he was attacked, by a person said by the police to be of Middle East origin. King Hussein of Jordan sent a special plane carrying two doctors to treat Mr. Khurme. The Indian authorities said he was out of danger and recovering. In Rome, Ambassador Taysir Alaedin Toukan was attacked while travelling between the embassy and his home in the fashionable Parioli district. Eye witnesses said a gunman fired from the pavement into the ambassador's limousine as it slowed down at an intersection then escaped on foot. The ambassador was wounded in the shoulder, hand and legs. Surgeons removed seven bullets from him and said his condition was no longer serious. His chauffeur was hit in the throat and shoulder.
