Background: Thirty countries and more than 100 firms from all over the world have been taking part in Sudan's first international fair, which was opened by President Jaafar Nimeiri on Thursday (19 January).

SYNOPSIS: A steel-framed exhibition complex, the fair is on the banks of the Blue Nile, near Burri in greater Khartoum.

It houses three handsome international halls of 2,000 square metres each, a 2,500 square metre Afro-Arab pavilion and 38,000 square metres of open display ground.

The President's arrival for the opening marked the end of almost a year's work by some 3,000 people.

It cost the organisers, the Sudanese Exhibition Corporation, 13 million dollars to build the complex.

Representing the european Common Market Commission was its president Roy Jenkins.

Foreign dignitaries who accompanied President Nimeiri and Mr. Jenkins on a tour of the fair included the Commerce Ministers of Egypt, Morocco and Zaire.

The Chinese pavilion intrigued the Presidential party with its colour and exotic content. The fair was to last a week. Its 50,000 square metre site will be used for other exhibitions throughout the year.
