Background: Lebanese President Elias Sarkis arrived in Damascus on Saturday (November) at the start of an official visit to Syria at the invitation of President Hafez al-Assad.
SYNOPSIS: President Sarkis was greeted by the Syrian President when he crossed the border between the two countries by car.
The formal welcoming ceremonies took place on the border between Syria and the Lebanon, where the Presidents commented they were pleased to see that the situation in the Lebanon was improving day by day.
After the formal ceremonies on the border, the Presidents left in a motorcade for the capital of Damascus where talks between the two leaders were to take place at the Presidential Palace.
During the visit by President Sarkis, the Middle East situation was due to be discussed, as well as other matters affecting the two countries. President Sarkis said that the Lebanese would not forget the "noble and brotherly" attitude adopted by Syria under President Assad's leadership during the Lebanese crisis.
The visit to Damascus by the Lebanese President was due to last for two days.
