Background: Mexican tennis champion Raul Ramirez consolidated his lead in this year's Commercial Union Grand Prix by beating Spaniard Jose Higueras in the second round of the Dewar Cup on Wednesday (3 November). He took the match in London, U.K. by 6-7, 6-2, 6-1.

Ramirez serving again. The young Mexican is currently leading in all three sections of the tennis world's richest Grand Prix -- in the men's singles, the men's doubles, and the mixed doubles. His Dewar Cup points, in London's Albert Hall, have helped put him into a commanding lead for the Grand Prix finals in Houston, Texas, in the United States next year.

Higueras serving to try and maintain his first set lead of seven games to six.

It was announced this week that a new sponsor -- the Colgate-Palmolive group of companies -- will take over the financing of the Grand Prix with a GBP375,000 (nearly 600,000 U.S. dollars) contribution when the Commercial Union group pulls out after the current season's finals.

Higueras serving again in the last set -- and struggling after losing the second set two games to six. Ramirez showed off the form which has taken him swiftly to the top this year, to take the match 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, and assure himself a place in the quarter finals against Wotjek Fibak of Poland. With this sort of form, Ramirez looks set to gain a share of the 100,000 dollars (GBP80,000 sterling) worth of prize money.
