Background: PRODUCTION WAS VIRTUALLY AT A STANDSTILL IN THE ASTURIAN COALFIELDS OF SPAIN AS THE WEEK DREW TO A CLOSE WITH THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE 40-THOUSAND MINERS IN THE AREA ON STRIKE.

MANY OF THOSE NOT STRIKING WERE EITHER SURFACE WORKERS KEPT IDLE BECAUSE NO COAL WAS COMING UP OR MAINTENANCE TEAMS KEEPING PUMPS AND OTHER VITAL INSTALLATIONS RUNNING.

STRIKERS CAME OUT IN SYMPATHY WITH MEN LOCKED OUT BY MINE OWNERS AFTER DISPUTES OVER WORKING CONDITIONS. BUT, AS HAPPENED IN THE ASTURIAS STRIKES OF 1962 AND 1963, THE ATTITUDES AND REAL AIMS OF WORKERS AND EMPLOYERS ARE NOT CLEAR CUT.

THE ASTURIAN COALFIELDS ARE GOING THROUGH AN ECONOMIC CRISIS DUE TO HIGH PRODUCTION COSTS AND THE CHANGE TO FUEL OIL AND ELECTRIC POWER OF MANY INDUSTRIES.

ONE GOVERNMENT NEWSPAPER SAID THAT THE STRIKE TORN MINING REGION WAS BEING CONVERTED FROM A GREAT SOURCE OF RICHES INTO "AN ECONOMIC RUIN".
