Background: Motor-racing -- and Belgian driver Jacky Ickz set a new lap record to help his Martini Porsche 936 Turbo team win the 1977 Le Mans 24-hour on Sunday (12 June). Ickx's lap time was three minutes 36.8 seconds -- that's three seconds less than the previous record set by France's Francois Cevert in a Matra in 1973.

SYNOPSIS: Le Mans this year was the battle of the turbo-chargers. The open-topped Porsche 936s and the 935 coupe, the three Alpine-Renaults and the two Mirage-Renaults supporting them all had engines boosted by exhaust- driven superchargers. Renaults and Porsche rate a Le Mans victory so highly that this year they've neglected most other events and thrown their main efforts into the premier French motor race. Porsche first, Mirage-Renault second, Porsche third. It paid off.

This year's line-up was drawn from an entry of 70 -- and Porsche made suer of their strength by entering 30 cars. A West German Porsche limped over the finishing line after a dramatic last moment pit stop threatened to rob the team of its fourth Le Mans victory. With 45 minutes of the race to go, Jurgen Barth pulled the Porsche into the pits, his car belching smoke. At that stage, the car was leading by a car must still be running at the end of 24 hours. Barth's car was fixed; he just made it twice round the circuit - and took the flag.

United States driver Hurley Haywood completed the winning team, which drove the Porsche at an average speed of 120.88 mph (194.7).
