Background: PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN OF PAKISTAN FLEW INTO LONDON TODAY (MONDAY) AND TOLD PAKISTANI IMMIGRANTS THAT AS LONG AS THEY WERE IN BRITAIN THEY SHOULD ABIDE BY THE LAWS OF THE LAND.

THE PAKISTAN PRESIDENT ADDRESSED HIS REMARKS TO A CROWD OF OVER A THOUSAND CHEERING COUNTRYMEN WHO WELCOMED HIM AT LONDON AIRPORT. HIS STATEMENT SEEMED AIMED BOTH AT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND AT DEMONSTRATORS OF THE KIND WHO, ONLY TWO WEEKS AGO, BRIEFLY TOOK CONTROL OF THE PAKISTAN HIGH COMMISSION IN LONDON TO PROTEST AGAINST THE AYUB REGIME.

FEARS THAT FURTHER ANTI-AYUB DEMONSTRATIONS MIGHT BREAK OUT PROMPTED SCOTLAND YARD TO MOUNT A HEAVY GUARD FOR THE PRESIDENT'S ARRIVAL. BUT THE CROWD WAS A WELCOMING ONE.

PRESIDENT AYUB IS IN BRITAIN FOR A TEN-DAY PRIVATE VISIT DURING WHICH HE WAS SCHEDULED TO UNDERGO A HEALTH CHECKUP. HIS ONLY OFFICIAL ENGAGEMENTS WERE A LUNCH WITH QUEEN ELIZABETH AND A MEETING WITH PRIME MINISTER HAROLD WILSON.

ONE LONDON NEWSPAPER - "THE GUARDIAN" - SAID TODAY THAT PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN WOULD SEEK DEFENCE EQUIPMENT, INCLUDING NAVY VESSELS, IN OFFICIAL TALKS. BUT AT THE AIRPORT PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN SAID THIS SHOULD NOT ALWAYS BE ASSUMED ON EVERY VISIT HE MAKES ABROAD.

TONIGHT, ABOUT 150 PAKISTANIS, MANY CARRYING FLAMING TORCHES, CLASHED WITH POLICE OUTSIDE CLARIDGES HOTEL. VIOLENCE FLARED IN A DEMONSTRATION BY ANTI-REGIME PAKISTANIS CHANTING AND SHOUTING. THERE WERE SCUFFLES WITH POLICE, BUT NO ARRESTS WERE MADE AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES.
