    DR. BANDA PRESENTED HIS GUESTS WITH TWO LARGE ELEPHANT TUSKS. IN HIS SPEECH HE RECALLED THAT HE WAS A PRISONER OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WHEN HE FIRST MET SIR GLYN JONES. BUT IN SPITE OF THAT FACT THEIR FRIENDSHIP HAD GROWN FROM THAT MOMENT. DR. BANDA DESCRIBED HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH SIR GLYN AND LADY JONES AS "ONE OF THE BEST THINGS OF MY LIFE".

    IN HIS REPLY SIR GLYN SPOKE OF THE MALAWI CIVIL SERVICE AND THE ARMY AND POLICE. HE SAID HE WAS HAPPY TO OBSERVE THEIR LOYALTY AND THEIR COMPLETE CONFIDENCE IN THE GOVERNMENT OF THE COUNTRY.

    ABOUT 350 GUESTS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE ATTENDED THE CEREMONY WHICH WAS HELD IN THE CITY'S MAIN HOTEL, ALREADY SPECIALLY REDECORATED FOR REPUBLIC DAY.
