Background: Big crowds lined Sydney streets today to watch the stirring spectacle of Her Majesty's Irish Guards making their first official appearance in the city. The Guards resplendent in their brilliant uniform, marched down Martin Place to the Cenotaph.
With faultless precision, the guardsmen snapped to a jarring halt while their representative moved forward to place a wreath at the Cenotaph. A token of respect from a famous English regiment.
The bandsmen, tall and motionless, saluted as the Last Post was sounded. Irish pipers included in the contingent with the brass band, later played a lament and the ceremony finished with a resounding performance of a specially arranged hymn. Traffic noises were drowned as the whole of Martin Place echoed to the strains of the band. Onlookers packed on the Post Office steps cheered enthusiastically as the guards marched away to a civic reception at the Sydney Town Hall. The band is giving a series of concerts in Australia.
