TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: EDWARD KENNEDY: "I think when you lose, whether it's one vote or two or even this number, you lose--and that's the factor I've learned a long time ago. Unless you know how to lose, you don't deserve to win."



REPORTER: "What does this vote represent to you?"



KENNEDY: "Well, I think it's a recognition that Senator Byrd had been extremely attendant to details of the floor and to the kinds of procedures which have been extremely helpful to other members of the senate. I had a campaign....I spent a great deal of time up in my state....but I make absolutely no excuses. I think he's served us very well and deserves credit."

Background: Senator Edward Kennedy gave credit to Senator Robert Byrd who has ousted him from the assistant leadership of the Senate Democrat group. Senator Byrd, he said, had attended to detail and to procedures in Washington. He had served well and deserved credit, he added.

In the election for the assistant Senator Democratic leader, Senator Robert Byrd was elected by 31 votes to 24. Senator Kennedy, who had held the job for two years, went into the election as favourite to retain it. His defeat is regarded as a setback in his political career.
