Background: West German Chancellor Ludwig Erhard flew home to Bonn today (30 December) after a two-day conference with President Lyndon Johnson at the President's Texas ranch home.
The two leaders issued a joint communique committing their governments "to explore all opportunities for the improvement of East-West relations, the easing of tensions, and the enlargement of the prospects of a peace that can be stable because it is just."
On Sunday (29 December) Dr.Erhard and President and Mrs.Johnson attended a barbecue luncheon served for about a hundred guests in the Stonewall High School gymnasium. They ate beef barbecue, spareribs, potato salad, and baked beans.
Guests at the luncheon heard a 42-member mixed choir of the St.Mary's School sing "Deep in the Heart of Texas," a song that Texans sing at every possible occasion. Then President Johnson presented Dr.Erhard and each member of his party with a 10-gallon Texas hat.
