Background: IN THE SOUTHERN STATE OF LOUISIANA, DEMOCRATIC VOTERS WENT TO THE POLLS YESTERDAY (SATURDAY), TO CHOOSE THEIR CANDIDATE TO RUN FOR ELECTION AS THE STATE'S NEXT GOVERNOR.THE CONTEST TAKES ON ADDED SIGNIFICANCE AS THE FIRST STATE PRIMARY ELECTION, SINCE THE ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY.

(LOUISIANA HAS HAD A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR FOR THE PAST 88 YEARS, SO DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION IS VIRTUAL ELECTION.)
PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S DEATH MARKED A TURNING POINT IN THE CAMPAIGN.UNTIL THEN, HIS POLICY OF CIVIL RIGHTS WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE - ATTACKED BY ALL TEN CANDIDATES - IN BIDS TO GAIN SUPPORT OF THE POWERFUL SEGREGATIONALIST VOTE.THOSE WITH THE SLIGHTEST HINT OF CONNECTION WITH THE PRESIDENT AND HIS POLICIES, SPENT A GREAT DEAL OF TIME AND EFFORT, DENYING THEY WERE 'KENNEDY CANDIDATES'.ALL THIS STOPPED WITH THE SHOOTING IN DALLAS.FOR THE LAST TWO WEEKS, CANDIDATES HAVE CONCENTRATED ON LESS CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES - BETTER ROADS, EDUCATION AND MORE EFFICIENT STATE GOVERNMENT.

LOCAL EXPERTS EXPECT THAT OF THE TEN CANDIDATES, THE PRESENT GOVERNOR, - DELESSEPS MORRISON - IS MOST LIKELY TO HAVE GAINED FROM ANY POLITICAL RECOIL ON THE KENNEDY ASSASSINATION.A FORMER MAYOR OF NEW ORLEANS, HE WAS ALSO KENNEDY'S AMBASSADOR TO THE ORGANISATION OF AMERICAN STATES.TWO OTHER MAJOR CANDIDATES - GILLIS LONG AND JOHN MCKEITHEN - RECEIVED POWERFUL SUPPORT FROM THE FAMILY OF THE STATE'S LATE GOVERNOR.EARL LONG.OTHER PRINCIPAL CONTENDERS INCLUDED ROBERT KENNON, A FORMER GOVERNOR, AND SHELBY JACKSON, STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION.
