Background: A large-scale demonstration of casualty evacuation was held at Versailles, France, May 4. It was a feature of the tenth medical conference sponsored by Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers in Europe (SHAPE), a division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Currently being held in Paris, the conference is attended by directors of the naval, army and air force medical services of the 15 NATO countries. These services enable the NATO medical authorities to exchange information on the various medical problems facing the Alliance in both peace and war.

The demonstration was held in the open at Villacoublay Airfield, Versailles. The evacuation involved the use of the "Airportable Universal Container", at present undergoing trials. It is designed for general military use - and the demonstration was designed to illustrate its use in a medical role.

Leading NATO personnel watched the air delivery of the container, its lift by helicopter to a simulated battle area, and its subsequent use as a field hospital. The surgical unit would be able to handle stretcher cases.
