Background: "STRIKE" ANNOUNCED THE BANNER HEADLINE OF THE MORNING PAPERS IN PARIS, NOVEMBER 28, AS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ON FOOT AND IN PRIVATE VEHICLES CROWDED THE STREETS ON THEIR WAY TO WORK.

AT 6 A.M. THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AND THE GAS SUPPLY WAS CUT, SUBURBAN ELECTRIC AND UNDERGROUND TRAINS WERE HALTED, CAFES, SHOPS AND OFFICES HAD TO USE CANDLELIGHT, UNCOLLECTED DUSTBINS OVERFLOWED, FACTORIES CLOSED DOWN FOR THE DAY, MOST PEOPLE WERE WITHOUT RADIO OR TELEVISION, AND EVEN HORSE RACING WAS CALLED OFF. ALL TRAFFIC LIGHTS WERE OUT OF ACTION, AND POINT-DUTY POLICEMEN HAD TO SORT OUT THE MORNING'S TRAFFIC JAMS.

FOR THE WOMEN IT WAS A DAY OF COLD MEALS, FOR MANY MEN A RETURN TO THE OLD-FASHIONED SAFETY RAZOR. CHANCES OF GETTING A SHAVE IN TOWN WERE DIM AS BARBERS' ASSISTANTS JOINED THE STRIKE. BUTCHERS PUT UP THEIR SHUTTERS FOR THE DAY, TAXIS WERE HARD TO COME BY, DENTISTS SHUT BECAUSE THEY WERE UNABLE TO USE ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT. ONLY THE BIG HOSPITALS WERE KEPT GOING BY SPECIAL SUPPLIES. EMERGENCY TRANSPORT WAS LAID ON BY THE ARMY FOR SUBURBAN WORKERS.

LIKE PARIS, MOST OF FRANCE WAS PARALYSED FOR THE DAY BY THE ACTION OF HALF A MILLION STRIKERS, EMPLOYED CHIEFLY IN STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISES. THE STRIKES ARE A PROTEST AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S ATTEMPT TO IMPOSE A WAGE PAUSE IN STATE INDUSTRIES. THE ELECTRICITY AND GAS STRIKE WAS TO END AT 4 P.M., THE RAILWAY STRIKE AT 3 A.M. THE FOLLOWING DAY.
