Background: The trial of ninety two men accused of plotting to overthrow President Anwar Sadat of Egypt was postponed in Cairo on Saturday (16 November) after defence lawyers alleged that some of their clients had been tortured during questioning.
The alleged plot was uncovered following the attack on Cairo's Technical Military Academy on 18 April. During the attack eleven people were killed and twenty seven others injured.
The postponement of the trial was announced at the end of a stormy session in the State Supreme Security Court after the Court President had ordered that six of the defendants be examined for signs of torture and that lawyers be allowed to see their clients privately. The trial is to resume on 14 November.
