Background: One of the many gruelling problems confronting the authorities after the earthquake in southern Italy is getting accommodation for the estimated quarter of a million people made homeless. Some have temporary shelter aboard two passenger ships berthed at Naples.

SYNOPSIS: One of the empty ships is the Citta di Napoli. Those people who've been taken on board are faring better than others, reported to have fashioned makeshift dwellings inside empty containers on the docks.

As well as being warm and dry, the temporary passengers have another basic need splendidly catered for -- food from the ship's kitchens. It is an irony that, for some, the disaster has led to an improvement in their diet. The crew are among hundreds of Italians who have rallied to help the victims.

These people were also free from the misery that has hit thousands in the earthquake-stricken region. On Friday (28 November) -- five days after the quake struck -- many of the homeless were huddled in tents, cars and ramshackle dwellings shivering as snow, rain and icy winds struck. The chilling weather brought the grave danger of bronchial pneumonia to those survivors with little protection, warmth or food. This added to the threat of contamination from decomposing bodies still buried in the rubble.

This mother and children were removed from such anguish by the generosity of the ship owners. But they are homeless ... and this is a temporary reprieve for them.
