Background: A modern mechanished farm west of Nubaria, and near the Cairo to Alexandria desert highway, was presented to the United Arab Republic by the Soviet Union at a ceremony on Thursday (30 July).
The farm has been developed on 10,500 acres of former desert land with the help of agricultural experts from the Soviet Union.
The farm is the result of an agreement signed in 1964 in which the Soviet Union promised to supply modern agricultural machinery and equipment for the establishment of a large farm, which would be handed over to the United Arab Republic as a gift.
The Soviet Minister of Land Reclamation and Water Conservancy, Mr Yevgeny Alexeyevsky, arrived at the farm on Thursday to officially hand the farm over. He was heading a delegation which had already had talks in Cairo at the invitation of the U.A.R. Ministries of Land Reclamation and Irrigation.
In the course of a tour of inspection, Mr. Alexeyevsky was shown the uses to which the new implements were begin put. He also saw the farm's first crop of maize and herd of cattle. Scientists searching for ways to reclaim the desert area on which the farm in now located, found the yellow clay soil responded well can be achieved from formerly barren terrain.
