SHE WAS ASKED ABOUT THEIR SUDDEN DEPARTURE FROM THE HOTEL DURING THE NIGHT OF 24TH DECEMBER, AND SHE SAID THEY HAD NOT SAID GOODBYE BECAUSE SHE WAS IN HER ROOM RECOVERING FROM INFLUENZA AND THEY THOUGHT SHE WAS NOT AT HOME. Background: THE FIVE GUNBOATS WHICH SLIPPED MYSTERIOUSLY OUT OF CHERBOURG OVER CHRISTMAS IN APPARENT DEFIANCE OF A FRENCH ARMS EMBARGO AGAINST ISRAEL WERE REPORTED HEADING EAST THROUGH THE MEDITERRANEAN TODAY (SUNDAY).

WHILE THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT OPENED AN INQUIRY INTO THE AFFAIR CHERBOURG ITSELF WAS QUIET AND A LANDLADY SAID SHE HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUDDEN DEPARTURE OF HER ISRAELI LODGERS WHO CREWED THE MISSILE LAUNCHING WARSHIPS.

THE BOATS HAD BEEN BUILT IN THE NORMANDY PORT OF CHERBOURG AND BLOCKED FROM LEAVING BY THE FRENCH ARMS EMBARGO FOLLOWING THE SIX-DAY WAR IN 1967.

NORWAY TODAY REJECTED AS "VERY DOUBTFUL" FRENCH STATEMENTS THAT THE GUNBOATS LEFT FRENCH TERRITORIAL WATERS UNDER THE NORWEGIAN FLAG. A FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN SAID THERE WERE STRONG INDICATIONS THAT THE GUNBOATS, SOLD TO AN ALLEGED NORWEGIAN FIRM, NEITHER FLEW NORWEGIAN FLAGS NOR CARRIED NORWEGIAN OFFICERS ABOARD.

THE GUNBOATS, WITH FRENCH-BUILT HULLS AND ITALIAN ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT, ARE KNOWN IN ISRAEL AS "SAAR" TYPE. THEY HAVE A RANGE OF 800 MILES (ABOUT 1,287 KILOMETRES). AS WELL AS MISSILES THE GUNBOATS CARRY TORPEDO AND ANTI-AIRCRAFT ARMAMENT.

THE BOATS ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN CREWED BY ISRAELI SAILORS WHO HAVE BEEN STATIONED IN CHERBOURG TO SERVICE THE BOATS AND THE LANDLADY AT THE HOTEL WHERE SOME OF THEM STAYED COMMENTS ON THEIR MYSTERIOUS DEPARTURE:
