Background: Rocket-powered shells are the innovation with a powerful new Howitzer under development for the United States Army. A two-second burn of solid rocket fuel, ignited after the shell has been fired, will give this new weapon a longer effective range.

Part of this official Defence Department film includes animation of the new weapon in operation. The XM-198 Howitzer can be easily airlifted by helicopter, and will play an important role with fast-moving airmobile infantry units. It should be in service by the mid-Seventies.

SYNOPSIS: A powerful new howitzer is currently under development for the United States Army. Called the XM-198, the new gun can increase its effective range by firing special rocket-assisted shells.

An animated sequence indicates how the shell ignites after firing. Following a controlled delay, a small rocket motor provides a two-second burn -- and that is sufficient trust to increase the range of the shell to about ten miles. The new howitzer is expected to come into service by the mid-1970s. It can be airlifted by helicopter for use by fast-moving infantry units.
