Background: First Tanzanian Vice-President and leader of Zanzibar, Sheikh Aboud Jumbe, paid a courtesy call on Friday (August 9) to the Nigerian Head State, General Yakubu Gowon, at the end of his five-day visit to Nigeria.

Sheikh Aboud arrived in Nigeria last Sunday (August 4) on the last leg of a four-nation West African tour which has taken him to Liberia, Guinea and Ghana. He first went to Monrovia where he attended the 127th anniversary celebrations of Liberian Independence.

In Nigeria, the Sheikh visited the northern city of Kano, centre of the groundnut industry, Benin, capital of the oil-rich mid-Western state, and Ibadan.

Before he left Nigeria for home, it was announced in Lagos that Nigeria and Tanzania had agreed in principle to explore all possible spheres within which to strengthen their economic ties.

Sheikh About told newsmen in Lagos that his visit had paved the way for both technical and educational cooperation between his country and Nigeria. "As a result of my visit I have been able to secure four scholarships for my country. this is the beginning of our exchange programme," he said. "African states have a lot to offer to one another and this is the only way towards it."
