REPORTER: He get a Polish ham in the market in Buffale. He did not get an endorsement at the mansion in New York. Then it was back to Spanish Harlem and one more ethnic group. This is the way a campaign goes in New York. The McGovern campaign knows it will win in New York, at least two-hundred delegates. But more, it hopes that the win will prove to be broad based, to show that their candidate is strong among all kinds of voters.

Background: While Senator George McGovern was busy campaigning in New York State over the weekend, Democratic Delegate Conventions in seven other states increased the South Dakota Senator's total delegate strength for next month's National Convention in Miami Beach.

He is expected to gain at least 200 delegates selected in New York's Presidential Primary on Tuesday (20 June). With other commitments from so far uncommitted delegates, Senator McGovern should have 1,325 votes -- 184 short of the 1,509 needed for nomination -- when the long and complex delegate selection process comes to an end next Saturday (24 June).

Senator McGovern has been campaigning in New York more actively than his organisers had intended. He has yet to gain either the official backing of the Democratic Party establishment or the support of his two chief rivals -- Senator Muskie of Maine and Senator Humphrey of Minnesota.

Aides of Senator McGovern are hopeful that a win in New York will not only gain him the needed delegate votes, but will also show that their candidate is strong among all kinds of voters. A win based on broad-based support could gain senator McGovern the backing of the Democratic Party hierarchy, which would like to see the senator moderate some of his political views.
