Background: Russian-born Dr. Barbara Moore, Britain's 56-year old last January vegetarian walker who sprang into the headlines with a Land's End -John O' Groats walk, last January, was battling Apr 19 through the Nevada desert to catch two British servicemen who left San Francisco 24 hours ahead of her - rivals on a trans-USA march.

At one stage Flight-Sergeant Patrick Maloney and Staff-Sergeant Mervyn Evans were drawing away from Dr. Moore, but - covering 109 miles in a day, and claiming to have run the last 40 - she shortened the gap to 40 miles. The two sergeants - she called them "ungallant" for capitalising on the walking craze she claims to have started, and for beginning the cross-continent walk before she did - said if she had narrowed the gap it was by car, not on foot.

But all 3 competitors have a long way to go yet - Nevada state is about 130 miles from San Francisco, and 2,700 miles from "finishing line" New York. So far, Dr. Moore has not been too lucky. A bogus reporter stole her spare walking shoes and a supply of fruit and vegetable juices, and a juice extractor salesman whose product she declined to endorse dumped her bags in the road and drove off. Her ankles and hands are swollen, her face blistered by the desert sun. Maloney and Evans seem better prepared; they have a colleague ahead, driving a car equipped with heds and cooking facilities. He also takes care of advance publicity.

Meanwhile, athletes of another type are proving their stamina on America's East coast' 154 first-class runners are competing in an annual 26-mile classic, the Boston Marathon.
