Background: Mr. Rauf Denktash was named vice-president of Cyprus on Friday (Feb 16) after his only opponent withdraw from the election, scheduled for Sunday (February 18).
Mr. Denktash's appointment was made at a brief ceremony in his office, attended by other members of the Turkish Cypriot community.
His sole opponent, Mr. Ahmet Berberoglu withdrew from the campaign but gave no reasons. He did publish a statement in Turkish Cypriot newspapers denying he had been intimidated into abandoning his campaign.
Mr. Denktash is president of the Turkish Cypriot community. He replaces Dr. Fazil Kutchuk, who retired after two years as vice-president.
