    Background: The First Battalion the Irish Guards paraded at Shoncliffe Barracks to receive their bunches of Shamrock from the Colonel of the Regiment, Field-Marshal Earl Alexander. First baskets were given to the Company Commanders for distribution. Then it was the turn of the officers. The shamrock, specially flown from CORK, was the gift of the Princess Royal.

    Now suitably dressed for the occasion, the Battalion marched past the saluting base to end the parade.
