Background: Poland's military chief, General Wojciech Jaruzelski, told the Sejm (parliament) on Monday (25 January) that martial law restrictions should be lifted by the end of next month. The general, who is also Prime Minister and Communist Party chief, was addressing the first full session of the Sejm since martial law was declared. But he made certain exceptions -- what he called "certain elements of martial law in industry" would have to be retained for a longer period. It was not possible to return to the old ways, he said. Referring to the arrested people in Poland he said more than 1,700 had been released from internment, but more than 4,500 were still in detention. He also accused Solidarity of paralysing the authorities, spreading hatred, and continuously breaking the law.
