SCU Secretary-General of the Islamic Council of Europe, Salem Azzam addressing newsmen in English.
AZZAM: "The Russian invasion of Afghanistan is a matter of great concern to us. The foreign ministers of both the countries met here last January to take note of the aggression and to take effective steps for its rectification. They also pledged to extend every possible assistance to Afghan refugees. The Moslem Ummah wants to know what actions have been taken by the governments of the Moslem countries in this connection. We pay our warm tribute to the people and the government of Pakistan, who have welcomed their oppressed Afghan brothers with open arms in the truly Islamic spirit. They have set a fine example for other Moslem countries to follow. We have noted with regret that there are some people in this great country and nation who are reported to view the Afghan refugees as a vermin and want Pakistan to get rid of them. This attitude of theirs is wholly un-Islamic and against the spirit of Islamic revolution. We view with a sense of outrage the continued unlawful and aggressive actions of the U.S.A. and her collaborators against the Islamic revolution in Iran and its government. The latest example of such acts is the despatch of a military task force into Iran and the infiltration in the country of a large number of armed agents. We hope that we have coped and that the ignominious fate of that task force will prevent further military adventures, overt or covert, by the U.S.A. or her accomplices. We call upon all Moslem governments to show their solidarity with their brothers in Iran and warn her enemies to stop meddling in her affairs."
