    Background: SEVERE EARTHQUAKES HAVE SHAKEN HUNDREDS OF MILES OF COUNTRYSIDE NEAR CAPE TOWN CAUSING WIDE DESTRUCTION AND THE DEATHS OF 11 PEOPLE. THE QUAKES AND TREMORS CONTINUED FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND WERE THE WORST IN SOUTH AFRICA FOR 37 YEARS.

    THE WORST HIT AREA WAS SOME 50 TO 70 MILES NORTH EAST OF CAPE TOWN -- NEAR THE TOWNS OF CERES, TULBACH AND WOLSELEY -- BUT THE EARTHQUAKES WERE FELT AS FAR AS 600 MILES NORTH ADN 900 MILES TO THE EAST.

    WHEN THE FIRST HEAVY QUAKES STRUCK ON THE NIGHT OF SEPTEMBER 29, PANIC STRICKEN RAN INTO THE STREETS AS BUILDINGS SWAYED AND POWER AND WATER WERE CUT.

    IN THE WINE-GROWING AREA NEAR CERES AND WOLSELEY HEAVY DAMAGE WAS CAUSED TO BUILDING, FIRES STARTED IN THE MOUNTAINS AND LANDSLIDES BLOCKED ROADS.

    NINE OF THE ELEVEN KILLED WERE CHILDREN AT A MISSION SCHOOL IN THIS AREA WHICH WAS DESTROYED IN THE FIRST QUAKE.

    THE TOTAL DAMAGE WAS ESTIMATED AT SEVERAL MILLION RAND.

    TROOPS BLOCKED OFF ROADS TO THE WORST HIT AREAS TO KEEP SIGHTSEERS AWAY.
