Background: MEMBERS OF THE FORMER BURMESE GOVERNMENT OVERTHROWN BY GENERAL NE WIN GATHERED IN BANGKOK ON SUNDAY (23 NOV) TO PAY HOMAGE TO THEIR FORMER PRIME MINISTER, U NU, WHO HAS BEEN GRANTED POLITICAL ASYLUM IN THAILAND.

U NU, WHO WAS DEPOSED BY GENERAL NE WIN IN 1962, RECENTLY RETURNED TO BANGKOK AFTER A WORLD TOUR DURING WHICH HE SOUGHT SUPPORT FOR HIS EFFORTS TO OVERTHROW GENERAL NE WIN'S GOVERNMENT IN BURMA. HE WAS GRANTED ASYLUM IN THAILAND LAST MONTH.

ON THAT OCCASION (29 OCTOBER), THE THAI FOREIGN MINISTER MR. THANAT KHOMAN SAID THE THAI GOVERNMENT HAD AGREED TO U NU'S REQUEST ON THE PRINCIPLE THAT HE WOULD NOT GET INVOLVED IN POLITICAL MOVEMENTS DURING HIS STAY.

THERE WAS NO NECESSITY TO LIMIT U NU'S PLACE OF RESIDENCE BECAUSE HE KNEW THAT THAILAND MUST MAINTAIN GOOD RELATIONS WITH GENERAL NE WIN'S GOVERNMENT IN BURMA, MR. THANAT ADDED. ASKED IF THE GOVERNMENT WOULD ALLOW U NU TO SET UP A BURMESE GOVERNMENT-IN-EXILE, MR. THANAT REPLIED "THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE".

U TWIN, WHO WAS TRADE MINISTER IN U NU'S ADMINISTRATION, AND ELEVEN OTHER POLITICIANS OPPOSED TO THE NE WIN REGIME, WERE ALSO GRANTED ASYLUM. THEY CROSSED INTO THAILAND RECENTLY.

ALSO PRESENT AT THE EXILES' GATHERING, WHICH MARKED THE THAI FESTIVAL OF LOY KHRATHONG, WAS U LAW YONE, FORMER EDITOR OF THE "NATION", WHO WAS JAILED FOR SEVERAL YEARS BY THE NE WIN REGIME.

U NU HIMSELF WAS RELEASED IN 1966 AFTER FOUR YEARS IN CUSTODY. BY THE BEGINNING OF THIS YEAR MOST OF THE 3,000 PEOPLE BELIEVED DETAINED AFTER THE 1962 COUP HAD BEEN RELEASED, BUT IN JUNE THIS YEAR GENERAL NE WIN MADE IT CLEAR THAT WHILE HIS REGIME DID NOT INTEND TO REMAIN IN POWER INDEFINITELY, PROPOSALS FOR THE FORMATION OF A NATIONAL COALITION GOVERNMENT WERE NOT REALISTIC.
