Background: In New Delhi on Sunday (11 March) the Dalai Lama, the Buddhist spiritual leader of all Tibetans, presided over a function during which hundreds of Indian Hindus, formerly known as Untouchable, were converted to Buddhism.

There are an estimated 80 million of these lower caste Hindus in India. Other sections of Indian society regard them as social and religious inferiors.

The religious function was organised by Buddhist monks who claimed that up to 4,000 people, had been converted.

During the past 20 years there has been an official move to improve the lot of India's former Untouchables, so far with limited success.
