Background: Last summer, Theresa Murphy--a 4-year old neighbor tumbled into the river and drowned. At the time, George Jones told police that he and the girl were throwing stones and sticks into the water. She lost her balance, fell in, and died. Police accepted the story.
Three days ago--7-year-old Louis Dimant disappeared. George told police he had seen the younger boy fall into the river, had tried to save him, without success.
Finally--after long questioning--police say George Jones admitted pushing both children into the Hudson because he was angry. Police immediately started dragging operations in the river to recover the boy's body. They also searched piers, warehouses, and vacant lots on the change that George's story might be at odds with the truth. George told police the other boy had promised to give him a dime for skating with him--had backed down on the promise--so he had lured the boy to the dock and shoved him in. In the case of the girl last June, George told police that Teresa had always "blamed him for everything." During police questioning, George's mother sat beside him, and urged him to tell the truth. By law, an 11-year-old cannot be charged with murder. George has been booked as a juvenile delinquent and faces a hearing in New York children's court next week.
