Background: Brigadier General Lon Non, the younger brother of the Khmer Republic's President, Lon No1, arrived in Paris on Tuesday (1 May) on an enforced visit. The trip was postponed several times over the past week.
Lon Non is the leader of the ruling Socio-Republican Party and commander of the Republic's 3rd division, and his influence over his brother, the President, has been steadily increasing.
His enforced visit to France comes as a result of the changes in the political structure in the Khmer Republic. On April 23, Marshal Lon No1, in order to resolve the political crisis within his country, accepted a compromise solution which suspended the one-party National Assembly for a period of three to six months. A new council of four members -- consisting of Lon No1 and three Opposition leaders -- will be given a free hand to run the country's affairs. According to a Reuters report the absence of Lon Non during this period was one of the prerequisites for the formation of the coalition government.
Lon Non will stay in France for approximately three weeks. He will visit the United States afterwards for a period of one month.
