Background: A Russian submarine tender put into Slite Harbour, Gotland Island, in the Baltic, April 7, after her captain, a young Lithuanian lieutenant asked for political asylum.

The crew of nine told the Swedish authorities they wanted to return home but were unable to navigate the two-hundred-ton tender. Officials of the Soviet Embassy were journeying to Slite to see if a replacement for the defected captain would be necessary for the return of the tender.

The captain asked for asylum after navigating the ship into Swedish waters where he was rowed ashore by a member of the crew.

About 30,000 inhabitants of the Baltic states, annexed by the Soviet Union, have found a home and citizenship in Sweden in the last two decades.
