POWELL: "The President appreciates the strong support in tonight's primaries, particularly in difficult times. From tonight's primaries, the President will have, with victories in Colorado, Texas and Guam, plus these primaries, better than fifteen hundred delegates. Really only, as it would appear now, two people that have a chance to be sitting in the oval office on January 21 to 1981. One of them is Governor Reagan and the other is President Carter."



KENNEDY: "Wait, wait, wait, wait. I can see why Jimmy Carter wants to stay in rose garden."



KENNEDY: "So we're going to have to work a little harder. We never thought it was going to be easy. We recognise that we're underdogs, but that's going to make us work a little harder and that's what we intend to do."



REAGAN: "The way I put it is that I am not so cautiously optimistic now. I am more optimistically optimistic, now than I've been. But I still keep on campaigning. I want to see that final figure."

Background: President Carter stood on Wednesday (7 May) within easy reach of the 1???80 Democratic Presidential nomination, after scoring three more primary election victories over Senator Edward Kennedy. On the Republican side, former California Governor Ronald Reagan also won three primaries with ease and appeared to have his party's nomination sewn up. Both the President and Mr. Reagan had lopsided wins in generally conservative states of Indiana, North Carolina and Tennessee. Senator Kennedy and former United Nations Ambassador George Bush, Mr. Reagan's last rival, each won primaries in Washington D.C. on Tuesday (6 May). But by unofficial count both Mr. Reagan and Mr. Carter have more than eighty percent of the delegate strength needed to win the Presidential nominations this summer.
