  • Description

PROFESSOR SIR JOHN BRUCE ONE OF THE EXAMINERS COMMENTS ON SUCCESS (SOF); MR. B.A. YAKUBU SPEAKS AT DINNER OF MEDICAL STUDENTS ASSOCIATION (SOF).

TRANSCRIPT: BRUCE: "WE HAVE BEEN VERY IMPRESSED BY THE STANDARD OF THE CANDIDATES WE HAVE EXAMINED. I DON'T KNOW IF I HAVE EXAMINED BETTER CANDIDATES ANYWHERE THAN THE ONES WE HAVE SEEN HERE. IT SEEMS TO US AND I'M QUITE SURE MY OTHER EXAMINERS WILL AGREE WITH ME THAT THEY HAVE BEEN MOST SPLENDIDLY TRAINED WHICH I THINK HAS AMAZED ALL OF US IS THAT THIS HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED WITH SUCH RELATIVELY SMALL STAFF AS FAR AS NUMBERS ARE CONCERNED, COMPARED WITH MEDICAL SCHOOLS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD INCLUDING, I THINK, ALL AMERICA. I HAVE NO DOUBT AT ALL THAT SOME OF THESE STUDENTS WHO HAVE GRADUATED TOADY,W ILL BECOME SPECIALIST. THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN QUITE OUTSTANDING IN THE EXAMINATION AND I'M SURE THERE'S ALL THE MATERIAL HERE FOR VERY GOOD SPECIALIST IN THE FUTURE."

TRANSCRIPT: YAKUBU: "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, AS YOU ARE ALREADY AWARE,THE COUNTRY IS TODAY FACING A CONSIDERABLE NUMBER OF GRAVE PROBLEMS -- ONE OF THE MOST URGENT BEING THE PROVISION OF GOOD HEALTH FACILITIES IN ALL THE REGIONS. THIS DIFFICULT SITUATION HAS BEEN FURTHER WORSENED BY AN ACUTE SHORTAGE OF DOCTORS WHICH WE ARE DESPERATELY TRYING TO REMEDY. IT IS FOR THIS REASON THAT THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL AND THE PEOPLE OF GHANA ATTACH GREAT IMPORTANCE TOT HE DEVELOPMENT OF MEDICAL TRAINING FACILITIES IN GHANA. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, AMONG YOU HERE TONIGHT ARE THE FIRST BATCH OF STUDENTS WHO WILL SOON BE PASSING OUR OF THE SCHOOL AND I AM SURE THAT AS THE FIRST PRODUCTS OF THE SCHOOL THEY WILL REMEMBER ALWAYS THAT THEY HAVE A SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN MAINTAINING A HIGH STANDARD OF EFFICIENT SERVICE SINCE THE SCHOOL WILL BE JUDGED BY THEIR PERFORMANCE.

LET ME REMIND THEM THAT THEY WILL HAVE EMBARKED ON A CAREER WHICH CARRIES GREAT RESPONSIBILITIES FOR, ONE DAY, THEY WILL PUT A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION TO SUCCEED. I LEARN THAT THEY HAVE ALREADY OBTAINED A HIGH ACADEMIC STANDARD OF WHICH THEY SHOULD BE PROUD FOR THEIR PROFESSION WILL EXPECT THEM TO PUT INTO THEIR WORK A LARGE MEASURE OF DEDICATION, PATIENCE AND SYMPATHY AND WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT A WILLINGNESS TO SERVE THEIR FELLOW GHANIANS WHENEVER THEY ARE CALLED TO SERVE."
