Background: China's trial of ten former civilian and military leaders for alleged counter-revolutionary offences has entered its second week. the former high-ranking officers have admitted guilt for their involvement in the 1971 plot to depose Chairman Mao Tsetung. But the civilian "Gang-of-Four" were more reticent in their responses to the court's questions. The other civilian charged, chen Boda, one-time political secretary to Chairman Mao admitted in court on Saturday (29 November) that he had been responsible for the persecutions of several Chinese leaders.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Chen admitted responsibility for a radical editorial in the People's Daily in 1966 calling for the "sweeping away of all monsters and demons." The article was alleged to have caused countless human tragedies and branded leaders as "capitalist readers". Other acts led to the persecution of almost one hundred thousand people and the death of nearly three thousand.

In the military hearings, former Chief of General Staff, Huang Yongsheng confessed to being a member of the Lin Biao counter-revolutionary clique. Earlier evidence identified Mr. Huang as one of the officers who followed Marshall Lin to Canton at the time of the coup attempt.

Former Chief Naval Commissar Li Zuopeng, with the other four, is charged with planning to attack Chairman Mao's special train with flame-throwers and bazookas, and attempting to bomb it from the air near Shanghai. But Mao changed his travel plans.

Former logistics chief, Qiu Huizo joins the other defendants is answering additional charges of extremist activities during the cultural revolution. The five officers were arrested shortly after Marshal Lin was killed in an air crash while fleeing the aborted coup.

Former Chinese Air Force Commander Wu Faxian admitted that he had helped Chairman Mao's widow Jiang Qing to arrest innocent people who knew intimate details of her past. He also admitted taking part in the assassination and coup attempt on Chairman Mao.
