Background: Egypt had to exert little effort to beat Uganda 2-1 in the first round of the African Nations Cup soccer finals in Addis Ababa on Wednesday night (3 March).

But despite their win, the Egyptians did not have everything their own way.

They started extremely slowly and indecisively and gave the Ugandans far too much room. But for the first 20 minutes, the Ugandan forwards fumbled too much to capitalise on their chances and missed many good opportunities in front of goal.

Then, in the 21st minute, Ugandan leftwinger Denis Obua who had been active in several earlier abortive attacks, dribbled alone past three defenders to hit a good left-foot shot into the net.

The Ugandans in the crowd went made with joy but their joy was short-lived.

The shock of this first goal seemed to bring the Egyptians to their senses and only five minutes later Mostafa Abdo scored for them.

Egyptian inside forward Makhtar Aly Mokhtar centred from the left-wing. Ugandan goalkeeper Ali Sandegeya dived for the ball but was unable to gather it cleanly. It slipped out of his hands and Mostafa Abdo tapped in an easy goal.

The second Egyptian goal came six minutes later when Taha Rasry collected the ball close to the Ugandan goal and hammered in an unbeatable right-foot shot.

The shock of the Ugandan goal seemed to have brought the Egyptians to their senses and only five minutes later Mostafa Abdo scored for them.

For most of the game, the Egyptians appeared content to let most of the play take place in their own half, with the Ugandan midfield players staring some good moves which their forwards failed to finish.

Egypt's final and winning goal came in the 32nd minute of the game when Taha Rasry collected the ball close to the Ugandan goal and hammered in an unbeatable right-foot shot.
