    Background: NORTHERN IRELAND, BELFAST

As violence continued in Northern Ireland, the British Government came under growing pressure to appoint a new minister for the province, when James Prior steps down next month. In the strongly Catholic town of Strabane police fired plastic bullets as they were pelted with more than seventy petrol bombs. The latest surge of violence follows the death on 12/8 of Sean Downes, who was hit by a plastic bullet as he attended a Republican rally. He was killed when police charged the meeting in an attempt to arrest Martin Galvin, and official of the United States based "NORAID" Organisation which raises funds for the Republican cause. The minister for Northern Ireland, James Prior, has accepted responsibility for the incident. As street violence flared, police found themselves under attack in a Protestant, loyalist area of Belfast, the Shankill Road, for the first time in several years. The troubles began as Protestants reacted to a court hearing in which a former Ulster Defence Union (UDF) member gave evidence against 47 people.

Youths threw stones and petrol bombs and attempted to build barricades, and the following day saw the funeral of the 200th policeman killed in the Northern Ireland troubles. He died of injuries received in a bomb explosion nine months ago. In West Belfast later on, vehicles were hijacked and set on fire. Police said this was the work of small groups of youths.
