Background: One of Zambia's two Territorial Army Battalions recently went in to training camp beside the Kafue river in the Southern Province, for a two week period. The 7th Battalion the Zambia Rifles, commanded by Lt.Col Bill Baker is comprised of people from all walks of life.Average age of officers and men is between twenty and thirty years.Company Directors, Senior Civil Servants, old soldiers from the 1939-45 War, clerks, carpenters, businessman, medical assistance - all have joined to help form one of Zambia's main Defence arms.

At this annual training camp the theory learned during the year in the drill halls is put into practice on the ground.Officers, N.C.O's and men go through practical battle drill routine - such as the section right flanking attack shown - nights navigation marches, the art of camouflage, rifle and machine hun training, fieldcraft, signalling, in fact all the complex skills required of a modern infantryman.

About four hundred troops will have passed through the group during the fortnight it operated - not everyone could get leave in from their jobs for the whole period, but they came for as long as they could.

Highlight of the camp training was a supply drop by the Zambia Air Force.A Caribou aircraft flew from Ndola over the camp site and dropped rations packed by the Service Corps, and attached to parachutes.Of the eight cases of provisions dropped only four condensed milk tins were causalities, and even these were not wasted - they went straight into the tea billies.

Riflemen are seen enjoying their lunch after a hard morning field training.Standard Army rations included on this occasion bully-beef fresh vegetables, bread and butter, topped off with hot mug of tea - and then back to work.Afternoon's exercises including a demonstration of Field Battle Drill - off come the uniforms and equipment, and into that inviting cold water for a round with the medicine balls and a swim with their instructors.
