Background: IN SOUTH VIETNAM, ELEMENTS OF THE VIET CONG YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) FAILED TO RECAPTURE A LARGE SECRET ARMS DUMP, 50 MILES (80 KILOMETRES) SOUTH OF SAIGON, WHICH GOVERNMENT FORCES CAPTURED ON FRIDAY. THE DUMP IS IN A PART OF THE MEKONG RIVER DELTA AREA SAID TO HAVE BEEN UNDER EFFECTIVE VIET CONG CONTROL FOR MORE THAN A YEAR.

TWO BATTALIONS OF GOVERNMENT TROOPS TOOK THE ARMS DUMP AFTER A FIERCE BATTLE. AN AMERICAN MILITARY SPOKESMAN SAID THE DUMP CONTAINED 1,100 RUSSIAN-MADE RIFLES, 15 TONS OF AMMUNITION, ONE TON OF PLASTIC EXPLOSIVES. 100 EAST GERMAN-MADE MACHINE GUNS, 90 CHINESE-MADE SUBMACHINE GUNS, AND 240 AMERICAN-MADE RIFLES.

IN ADDITION, THE GOVERNMENT FORCES AND THEIR UNITED STATES ADVISORS ARE REPORTED TO HAVE UNCOVERED SEVERAL 70 MILLIMETRE LIGHT ARTILLERY GUNS AND 100 ROCKETS OF 40 MILLIMETRE SIZE. GOVERNMENT REPORTS PUT THE VIET CONG LOSSES IN THE FIGHTING AT 152 KILLED AND 38 CAPTURED, AND GOVERNMENT LOSSES AT THREE KILLED AND 11 WOUNDED.

(THE NORTH VIETNAM NEWS AGENCY SAID TODAY THAT THE COUNTRY WAS MAKING AN ALL-OUT DRIVE TO DEFEAT "U.S. AGGRESSION" BETWEEN MAY 1 AND THE 75TH BIRTHDAY OF PRESIDENT HO CHI MINH ON MAY 19. THE AGENCY, MONITORED IN HONG KONG, SAID THE ARMED FORCES HAD PLEDGED TO SHOOT DOWN "MANY MORE U.S. AIRCRAFT, SINK MANY MORE U.S. NAVAL CRAFT, DESTROY MORE ENEMY FORCES AND CAPTURE MORE ENEMY PILOTS AND COMMANDOS.")
