Background: The Soviet Communist Party leader, Mr. Leonid Brezhnev ended his five day official visit to India by signing a series of agreements for economic and technical cooperation. The Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, also took part in the signing ceremony, as did the Foreign Ministers of the two countries. Mr. Gromyko signed for the Soviet Union and Mr. Swaran Singh for India. The economic agreements are reported to involve a big increase in Indo-Soviet trade. India will exchange tea, jute and manufactured goods for Russian steel, copper and fertilisers. In the technical field, the Soviet Union will offer still further assistance with the development of Indian industry. The agreements will run for 15 years.
The Indian and Soviet leaders described their talks as "fruitful" and "productive". Correspondents report, however, that Russian attempts to organise an Asian security conference did not appear to have made much progr???s.
