Some of us are really risking our lives in what we are doing and yet we mean business. We are trying to resolve this situation and problem in this country and there is not yet time for rest (indistinct) ... Now I would like to appeal to all people ... to take this business very seriously... where people are dying unnecessarily. You are not aware -- I don't think you are aware - of the way our people are suffering. Our people are being tortured... some of you do not know. Methods of investigating what is going on in this country .. you have people beaten up and all this sort of thing. We don't like this. And we are tired... of being third class citizens in a country where we belong. We mean business when we talk about trying to work a settlement and we are very unhappy when we see some people who are just trying to interrupt. I don't think you appreciate being continuously to live like in a hut built on a volcanic mountain. Now, in trying to solve our problem, there are a number of things which are very serious to us. the first thing is our unity, that we have achieved...and I know there ar a lot of white people who are very sorry to know we are united and ...(indistinct) ...and this we are aware of and hate ..and this is where I want to be frank with you... we don't see any point in some people going all over the country interfering with every individual person they meet. This organisation has been set together as an orgaisation, through its executive, including everybody in this new body.

Background: The official leader of Rhodesia's five and a half million African citizens, Bishop Muzorewa said at a press conference in Salisbury on Wednesday (17 December) that his people were tired of third-class citizen-ship and that majority rule was the only basis on which his newly unified African National Council would be prepared to begin constitutional talks.

The Bishop said that the ANC, Rhodesia's only legal African group, meant business, adding that living in Rhodesia was like living on a volcano.
